Pre-Travel Period Information

Department of health information

If you are planning to travel abroad you should obtain a copy of the Department of Health booklet Health Advice for Travellers. This gives detailed information on health precautions, reciprocal health agreements, and vaccinations. It also contains Form E111 which entitles you to free or reduced cost emergency medical treatment in many EC countries.

The booklet is available over the counter at main post offices or by phoning the Health Literature Line (free of charge) on 0800 555 777.

Blood group
We believe that all travellers should know what blood group they are as this will enable prompt treatment in an emergency. In an emergency your Embassy may be able to find an expatriate donor. In some parts of the world this will substantially reduce your risk of being given contaminated blood.

If you do not know your blood group you can have it checked. This may involve a small cost.

Before you go, find out the address and telephone number of the your Embassy, High Commission or Consulate in the country or countries that you are visiting. Consulates exist to help their Citizens abroad to help themselves but their resources are limited.

We at TravellersHealth are working towards listing full international Embassy/Consulates and High Commisions information in following pages.

Emergency Services

Before you travel or on arrival take the time to find out how you would contact the police, the fire services and the ambulance services in an emergency and make a note of the relevant telephone numbers.

General

Make a list of the following:-

  • Serial number of tickets.
  • Passport number and date issued.
  • Credit card numbers and emergency number to report theft.
  • Drivers licence number.
  • Serial numbers of travellers cheques.
  • Serial numbers on valuables e.g. cameras.
  • Take copies of prescriptions for spectacles/contact lenses.
  • Serial number of travel insurance policy and a note of any emergency contact number.

We would suggest you make 2 copies of a list containing the information above. Leave one copy with someone you can reach in an emergency and take the other copy with you keeping it separate from your luggage and valuables.

It is a little tedious making such a list but if the worst comes to the worst it will be invaluable.
